I've just been through one of the most grueling years of my life.
Started off working on Betvin Geant's "Antichrist The last Day Chronicles". We worked together to find a style that suited and then produced the samples to send out. It took a few months and a lot of hard work, and I learned a lot. Unfortunately we couldn't find a publisher.
Anyway fortunately for me as I finished that I was approached by the band Twelve Foot Ninja
twelvefootninja.com/ and I set about adapting/writing and doing all the art for their new comics/graphic novel.. Basically it consists of 12 * 6 page comics that together comprise one graphic Novel of 72 pages. Each issue/chapter is inspired by a track on the new album and people who buy the album will get a copy of the comic in digital form with an option to buy them as printed comics for a small fee.
Production of TFN was an incredible experience for me. First there was the writing. I had to stick within the limits of the TFN world and work very short but complete stories out for each song (6 pages is quite a challenge). I wanted to write something that actually had an effect and at the same time reference many of the problems faced by people today, in exactly the same way the songs do. I hope I managed it.
Anyway, after writing and roughing out each issue I would then set about doing the final art.
At first it took me about 3 or four days a page but by issue 4 I got it down to between 8 and 14 hours a page. This was fortunate because my deadline was looming and I knew I had to kick out a page a day from that point on to make it.
Anyway here we are 72 pages later and its in the can and will be published in the coming weeks. As soon as its out I will be able to publish some tasters and hopefully some of you kind folx will go down to the TFN website and buy it. The music is amazing and inspiring so I heartily recommend it if only for that.
Anyhow, while all that was happening Betvin was trying to find a way to get "Antichrist The last Day Chronicles" off the ground. After it got this review :
comicsforge.com/2012/04/antich… He decided that we must produce it and he would fund it himself So just 10 minutes ago I signed a contract to do all the pencils. We managed to find a colorist (who I will introduce to you soon if it works out) which takes a considerable amount of pressure off me and means I can work more normal hours and get weekends off.
So now, not only do I have at least 12 months job security, I'll be working on a very different, exciting and challenging comic. This makes me feel good and I hope it gives all of you hope of getting somewhere. You see less than five years ago I didn't have any comic work in my portfolio at all and had only just decided to try and become a comics artist and writer. Now here I am able to call myself exactly that.
As they say in one of the greatest movies of all time (Galaxy Quest) "Never give up, Never surrender!" You wont be sorry.
